Amarr Cable & Drum Replacement: The Hollywood Park Owner’s Guide

Amarr cable and drum replacement in Hollywood Park typically runs $130-$250 installed, and we stock the common Amarr sizes on our trucks for same-day completion. Most jobs take under two hours once we’re on site. You’ll know this part has failed when the door hangs crooked, one side lifts faster than the other, or the cables have unspooled from the drum and now sit in a tangle above the header.

Which Amarr Models This Applies To

Amarr has produced several series over the years, and the cable drum spec changes with the door weight and track radius. The Classica and Heritage collections common in Hollywood Park’s 1980s and 1990s builds typically run 400-8 or 400-12 drums with 1/8-inch galvanized aircraft cable. Newer Stratford and Oak Summit doors often use the 5250 high-lift drum set with heavier 5/32-inch cable.

To identify your part, check the label on the inside bottom section of the door for the model and serial number. The drum itself usually has a casting number near the hub, something like “OMI 8” or “Amarr 400-12.” If the cable is still intact, measure its diameter with calipers; 1/8-inch and 5/32-inch are not interchangeable, and forcing the wrong size into a drum groove accelerates wear.

We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with Amarr. For most Hollywood Park homes, we install quality aftermarket cable and drum assemblies that meet or exceed OEM pull ratings at a lower parts cost. If you prefer factory Amarr components, we can order them; the lead time is typically three to five business days.

Signs Your Amarr Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • The door lifts crooked or one side hangs lower. When a cable frays or a drum cracks, the two sides of the door fall out of sync. The opener strains against the imbalance, which wears the motor gear and can twist the top section.
  • A loud bang or snap from the garage, then the door won’t move. That’s a cable breaking under load. In Hollywood Park, we see this most often in spring, when temperature swings between 50°F nights and 80°F days stress the metal.
  • Cable has jumped the drum and now loops loose. This happens when the drum’s grooves wear smooth or the set screws back out. The cable loses tension, the door drops on one side, and the opener safety reverse may not catch it in time.
  • Rust flakes on the cable or drum surface. Garage humidity in Texas hill country, especially near greenbelt lots like those off Bitters Road, corrodes galvanized cable from the inside out. The cable looks fine until it doesn’t.
  • The drum wobbles or clicks during operation. A cracked drum hub spins eccentrically, chewing the cable and eventually throwing it. We replaced three of these last summer on Amarr doors in Hollywood Park; in each case, the homeowner had noticed the click for weeks.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Hollywood Park Price Range
Cable & Drum Replacement (standard lift) $130-$250
Cable & Drum Replacement (high-lift or oversized door) $180-$320
Additional cable set (second door, same visit) $90-$180

The range depends on three factors: drum size and lift type, whether the cable has damaged the bottom fixtures or flag brackets, and if the door requires rebalancing after the new parts are in. We state the flat price before any work begins. Parts, labor, and the 90-Day Done Right Promise are included. If we quote $195, the invoice reads $195.

DIY or Call Us?

There is a safe middle ground here. You can inspect the cable for fraying, check whether the drum set screws are tight, and verify the door is level in the closed position. Do this with the door down and the opener disconnected.

What you should not do: release cable tension from a wound torsion spring, attempt to wind a new cable onto a drum with the door loaded, or stand on a ladder directly beneath a raised door while working on the hardware. The stored energy in a torsion spring can cause serious injury. We have cleaned up enough DIY attempts to say this plainly.

If the cable has come off the drum or broken entirely, the spring is still under load even if the door feels light. Call us. We carry Amarr-compatible drums and cables on the truck, and most Hollywood Park calls finish in one visit.
