Meet the Hollywood Park Team Behind Mainspring Garage Door Co.

We’re the crew that shows up when your garage door quits at 6 a.m. or your opener starts making that grinding noise at 10 p.m. Every technician here lives within 20 minutes of Hollywood Park, and we’ve all been through the same training, the same background checks, and the same rule: fix it right the first time, or come back until it’s done right. No arguments. No paperwork to fight through. That’s the deal Carl Dutton made with this community in 1984, and it’s the deal we still keep.

Carl Dutton, Owner

I started Mainspring Garage Door Co. in 1984, back when Hollywood Park was mostly ranch houses with single-car doors and everybody knew their neighbor’s phone number by heart. Forty-two years later, I’m still answering the phone myself some nights, still driving out when a spring snaps on a holiday weekend, and still writing the 90-Day Done Right Promise on every invoice with a pen, not a stamp. I’m factory-certified on LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, Craftsman, and Raynor, but the certification I care about most is the one our customers give us when they call back a second time. I named this company for the mainspring, the part that carries the full weight of a door. That’s the job. Carry the weight. Do it right.

Mike R., Lead Technician

Mike’s been with us 14 years, and he’s the guy we send when a torsion spring breaks on a 16-foot custom wood door in Terrell Hills or a cable snaps on a commercial roll-up near the airport. He’s certified in high-cycle spring systems and has a knack for diagnosing opener logic-board failures that other techs miss. Mike keeps a notebook in his truck with sketches of every unusual door he’s seen in Bexar County, which is how he fixed a 1987 Wayne Dalton TorqueMaster in one visit last March when the homeowner had been told they’d need a full replacement. Off the job, he restores vintage motorcycles and brings the same patience to both. He’ll talk your ear off about either if you let him.

Dolores V., Senior Installer

Dolores handles our new-door and full-replacement jobs from Alamo Heights up through Shavano Park, and she’s installed more Clopay Coachman and Amarr Classica doors than she can count. She came to us from a commercial construction background in 2016, which shows in how she levels a track system and seals a threshold. Dolores is particularly good at matching replacement doors to HOA requirements in gated communities around Hollywood Park, where the architectural guidelines can be picky about panel style and color. She carries a paint-matching tool in her kit that she’s used exactly twice, but both times it saved a customer a three-week delay. She has two dogs who are not impressed by her work stories, and she makes a point of texting customers photos of the finished job before she leaves the driveway.

James T., Service Coordinator

James is the live voice you get when you call (830) 356-2849 at 2 a.m. on a Sunday or 7 a.m. on Christmas. He’s been with Mainspring eight years, and he knows which technician is closest to which neighborhood, which trucks carry which spring sizes, and whether that odd noise you described is likely a worn bearing or a failing gear sprocket. James schedules our routes to keep drive times short, which is why we can usually get to Hollywood Park and the surrounding communities fast without promising what we can’t deliver. He grew up in Castle Hills, so he knows which streets flood in a hard rain and which driveways are too steep for a standard extension spring setup. He’s also the one who follows up after every job to make sure the work held up, because Carl still reads every one of those calls.

Elena M., Apprentice Technician

Elena joined us in 2023 after four years as an HVAC apprentice, and she’s bringing a mechanical eye that’s already saved two customers from unnecessary opener replacements. She’s working through her journeyman certification under Mike’s supervision and has taken the lead on cable and roller replacements across the north side of San Antonio. Elena grew up in a house with a garage door that never worked right, so she understands the frustration from the customer side. She asks more questions than most apprentices, which means she catches things early. She lives in Hill Country Village and has started recognizing door brands by sound from two houses away, which she finds slightly embarrassing but we find useful.
